The County Minutes reveal in the early days that the County Emergency Committee (later the County
Executive) encouraged clubs to provide experience bowlers in each of their clubs to assist newcomers to
the sport following the Second World War.
The Hertfordshire Bowls Coaching Society was set up in the early 1960s to provide practical instruction
and coaching at all levels to applicant clubs. The English Coaching Bowls Society ECBS (Formally called
the 'English Bowls Coaching Scheme’ until 2012), course structure was used for training Instructors and
Level 1, 2 and 3 coaches. Following a major revision to the way Coaching is conducted in the UK, coach
training in Hertfordshire is now organised by Coach Bowls.
The objectives of HBCS are to raise standards of coaching and play, and increase participation of bowls
within Hertfordshire .
Membership of HBCS is open to bowls coaches, all genders and all levels of competence, as certified by
Coach Bowls and/or the EBCS.
